Masada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, is where the Jews took their last stand in the first Jewish-Roman war. When the Jewish 'Zealots' knew they were about to be defeated, the men killed their wives and children and then killed each other by drawing lots to determine who would kill who since suicide is strictly prohibited by Jewish law. They would rather die than be slaves to the Romans. Two women and five children managed to hide during this mass suicide to tell the tale...
